I like to add features to the creatures that I draw, some of them are:
Rectangles- rectangles that you place along the body in patterns, they bulge a little.
Frills- webbing that protrudes from finger-like spines along the spine and on joints.
Fur- fur that you can place in random spots, or it can cover the whole body.
Horns- spikes that look good along the spine, on the head as a crest and on joints.
Sticks- sticks that protrude off the body, looks best on the head like a unicorn horn.
Stripes/Spots-spots or stripes that resemble a tiger or leopard, be careful what color you make them, not to flashy, make sure it matches.
Feathers-feathers that protrude off the body, looks good on the head like a crest.
These were some that i use but you can certainly think of more for your own, if you have a different feature, please share and post it on a comment.

What about combining all of them?
I drew this Cosmo at school, and it's wings are made of feathers at the top, and at the bottom it turns into bat-wings. It also has a bird-tail with webbing at the base of it's tail.
